Communications:   Picnic will be held on the 28th after mass.  One area that will be discussed is: the cost for the school per student of $6,850 while tuition is only $2,900.  The school day will go from 8:10 am to 3:05.  Need to provide a list of meetings and member terms to Vera.

Finance – Finance approved reduction of 3% for 30 hours and 5% for 60 hours.

Parent Commitment Proposals

A cover letter with commitment forms will go out to all families.  Forms will be due back after the green sheets go out so that people can see what their options are for hours.

Communications:   Lynn communicated that Virtus training will be held on August 29th in Big Rapids.  School will start at 8 am on August 30th.  Preschool will start on September 12th.  Enrollment for the fall is currently 81 students, potential of 2 more families that could raise enrollment to 90.  The staff will be having CPR training discussed possibly opening it up to the parish.  Handbook was updated, Lynn to follow up to make sure all revisions were included.  Phosphate filters will be in place by start of school.    Plan to move forward with school picnic on August 28th

Finance – Finance did not meet in July.

Marketing – Committee did not meet but board discussed ideas for an Alumni drive and creating a newsletter to be distributed.

Parent Commitment Proposals

Discussed the three options presented by committee.  Plan to move forward with proposal.  Lynn to take to Finance to see if they had any concerns.

Program Effectiveness Survey

Discussed areas that are showing improvement and items that need improvement.

Member Comments:  

Claudia will follow up with Mo and Vera on open items for upcoming year athletics.  Plan to add athletic volunteers to green sheet

Principal Search

The committee will meet again on August 14th to review next steps

The School Board, Finance and Pastoral Council will plan a reception with the new principal once one is hired.

Communications:  Dominic reported that there are currently 82 students enrolled in Preschool-6th grade.  Last year there were71 students enrolled.  Waiting until July to order books.  The teacher assignments for next year will be Preschool – Jessica Pelong, Kindergarten- Kerri Mickey, 1st/2nd – Marti Snyder, 3rd/4th- David Lobert, 5th/6th Elizabeth West.  The water was tested again a phosphate injection system for water will be installed waiting on DEQ, Dominic to communicate.  

Comments from the Floor:  Hillary Denslow, read a letter that she will be sending to the Diocese.

    2. Technology – St. Mikes on Spikes will be held on July 13 could use volunteers from the Board and School to help.

    1. Topic was around communication – will share information with Marketing Committee.

    1. The committee came up with three options.  Information will be emailed to all members and discussed at next finance meeting and board meeting in August.
  4. Member Terms
    1. Amy Fiegel’s term is up and Ken Cook is stepping down due to his availability.
    2. Officer positions for the next year will be discussed at August meeting.

    1. Suggested adding polices and procedures to the green sheet and including a training for fish fry.

Communications:  All current families have received registration forms for the 2016-2017 school year.  Preschool and Kindergarten Round-up/Informational Meeting will be on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. There has been a lot of interest in the preschool program, so Mr. Franconi is expecting a good turn-out. Round-up was advertised on the radio and on Facebook.  Mr. Franconi is looking into some new hands-on science equipment for grades K-6 for next school year.  He would like each grade level to do one science lab per week.  Fr. Aaron reported that they are working on a master plan for the parish.  They have met with an architectural firm for some preliminary questioning and planning for parish beautification.

A.    Committee Reports: 

a.      Building and Grounds – Rekeying of the entire school building will occur over spring break.  The school’s water heater went out, so it must be repaired or replaced. 

b.      Finance – the finances are in good standing.

 

B.     Fish Fry – Children running in the halls during Fish Fries has been a concern.  It was suggested that child care be placed on the Fish Fry sign-up sheet to eliminate this problem.  The parents would need to be Virtus trained. 

C.    Five Year Strategic Plan – Completing a five year strategic plan is one of the requirements of accreditation.  The community must be engaged by surveys and/or town hall meetings.  Mr. Franconi sends out a program effectiveness survey to all St. Michael School parents each school year.  He would like to wait until the new survey is completed so that the information gathered can be used to move forward with the strategic plan.

 

D.    Review the Call to Teach - Discussed pages 7-12.  Plan to discuss pages 12 to the end at the April meeting.

Communications:

Daddy/Daughter dance was a big success.  There were 72 tickets sold and everyone had a good time.  The dance was attended by former students and community members in addition to students.  Matt offered to provide food next year.  There will be a Mother/Son bowling event on May 6.  The Carnival is tentatively scheduled for May 22 from 1:30-3:30.  Possible activities include bounce house, DJ, carnival games, and cake walk.  Looking at selling both wrist bands and tickets.  Round up will be held on March 16, 2016.  Letters went out to school age kids in the parish regarding the round up.

Communications:

Domenic reported: Buildings and grounds is working on getting measurements to Central Fire, so that they can submit their proposed improvement of the fire alarm system to the state for approval. The school is looking into replacing the doors between the Parish Center and the school with doors that can be lock from the school side in order to keep visitors from other events from entering the school. Catholic Schools Week has been planned and there will be many activities taking place that week, such as an open house, spelling bee, an anti-bullying assembly, a visit by students to the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Grand Rapids, and a talent show. It was also noted that Jessica PeLong, the preschool director, is working diligently to make sure they are in compliance with all state regulations to ensure the license will be renewed. The Daddy Daughter Dane will take place on February 6 and the carnival committee has been working to organize the carnival that is tentatively scheduled for May 22, 2016.

Ken Cook Assisted in the review of the School Budget

The Mission was updated: St. Michael Catholic School is committed to providing students with a Christ centered education, while establishing and maintaining a safe environment with spiritual and academic standards that develop students to their highest potential.

Discussed proposal for holding families accountable to time and talent

Proposal – Each family is responsible for donating 32 hours of service per year. If a family completes their 32 hours, they will receive a discounted tuition rate for the upcoming school year. 6th grade parents will not be required to complete the 32 hours as a thank you for their commitment to the school.

Communications:

Lynn handed out the information on the 2015 Fall NWEA Test scores.  The results compare Saint Michael School, G.R. Diocese and National Results.  Need to utilize this information when recruiting new families.

Action Items

A.       Committee Reports – Finance – Hoping to have report to share at the next meeting.  Still having some challenges with the new system. Update will be given in January on what will be done with the funds raised at the auction

B.       Review School Board Training Video – The video explained roles and responsibilities of board members.  Brief introduction of website and resources available to board members.  Each member will go online individually and review information on the Committees that they sit on.

C.      Discussed options for the 2016-2017 tuition rates.  Board suggested raising by $100 for first child only.  All other rates would remain the same.  Increase also, applies to preschool.  Also, discussed how to determine Parishioner involvement.

D.      Review mission statement – Dave Faber would like the statement to be more Christ Centered
